How To Use Meditation To Heal From Chronic Pain

If you’re familiar with my work, you know that I lived with chronic pain for so many years. 

It all started in my first year of university, and it continued all the way through graduation and getting my first job. 

I’ve always been passionate about health and fitness (I remember repeating cardio step dance DVDs all day long as a kid), and living with chronic pain was a painful physical and emotional experience…

I had to give up on my dream to pursue any fitness related career…because I literally couldn’t function.

This is how I started discovering mind-body healing and the mind-body connection.

I discovered Dr. Sarno’s books (all about the mind-body connection), took his DVD course and continued to learn more about the power of the mind and neuroplasticity. I found out that the reason why I couldn’t break free from the pain was that my nervous system was conditioned to feel pain.

And since then, I never looked back!

My health completely changed!

The mind-body healing tools (and the meditations I want to share with you) work. How do I know that?

Well, I look at my life right now and I feel a deep feeling of gratitude.

I was able to break free from the pain and start living a normal life again. I pursued my dream to become a health coach and started my coaching practice! 

Without using the following tools, I’m not sure I would have been able to achieve any of my life goals.

So I’m very excited to share with you how I did it. Because I wholeheartedly believe you can do it too!

3 Meditations To Heal Chronic Pain

Body Scan Meditation

Body scan meditation is a powerful meditation practice that’ll allow you to tune inwards, feel your body and muscles and, most importantly, disrupt the stress cycle.

This type of meditation is so beneficial in strengthening your mind-muscle connection… You know when you’re trying to activate a certain muscle, but you’re not quite feeling it?

Well, imagine being able to quickly activate your muscles. Okay, funny story for you…

When I first started practicing body scan meditation, I noticed that I couldn’t feel my right ear. I tried so hard, but nothing was there!

It was also very hard to let go of the tension in my legs. My legs were extremely tight and tense, and I was completely unaware of that.

Another thing I noticed was my shallow breathing…

Shallow breathing is an automatic stress reflex.

As you scan your body all throughout the day, you’ll be able to notice and disrupt the stress cycle.

Most people are unaware of all these subtle things happening in their bodies…

If you’re not fully aware of them, they’ll keep building up until the pain threshold is reached and the pain is triggered.

You can easily avoid this if you simply tune inwards and notice what’s going on in your body before the onset of pain (how you’re holding your posture, if your breathing is shallow, if you’re lower back is tensing up, etc.), you’ll be able to make very quick changes BEFORE the pain is triggered.

Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness meditation helped me release tightness and tension I didn’t know I was holding on to

Listen, good quality sleep and deep relaxation are required for proper healing and recovery. If you’re not properly activating the parasympathetic nervous system – the part of the nervous system that’s responsible for regeneration, healing, and recovery, then your body will have a hard time healing. 

Constant light and noise stimulation before bed (especially from our phones) won’t let your body switch off into its healing mode. And this is when mindfulness meditation is so beneficial.

By releasing each part of your body, you’ll be reaching very deep levels of relaxation (that you normally can’t reach) allowing all tension to be released. 

You’ll not only be sleeping better but you’ll also avoid pain and discomfort in the middle of the night.

Visualization Meditation 

Visualization is a fantastic form of meditation to accelerate healing. It’ll allow you to use the process of neuroplasticity to recondition the nervous system to feel pain-free again. 

Neuroplasticity is a powerful brain process and you want to use it to your advantage.

When you’re starting to experience pain, your brain will build a pain memory – by building new neural pathways associated with that pain. 

And everything associated with that pain memory can easily trigger more pain.

You’ve probably noticed how sometimes sitting on the same chair or in a certain area of your office or home can easily trigger pain (even though there is no direct trigger).

The good news is, you can use visualization meditation to reverse this by creating new neural pathways associated with the non-pain sensations and slowly you’ll start making the older pain neural pathways weaker to the point you’ll barely remember what the pain feels like anymore.

It’s crazy. I know! But neuroplasticity is a very known process in the field of neurology…but very few people are aware of how it works.

And that’s exactly what I did to fully heal and let go of all feelings and sensations of pain.
